Michael Grätzel's solar cells, developed in Lausanne, are now used in Africa. - swissinfo

German researcher Michael Grätzel is well-known for inventing a new class of low cost solar cell at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. The Dye-Sensitised Thin Film solar cells (DSC) are unique in that they produce electricity in low light and indoor conditions. A company in Wales now uses the technology to commercially produce DSC-powered mobile chargers and LED lights for the African market.
