The Institute for Biomedical Research (IRB) in the southern Swiss town of Bellinzona has produced antibodies that could protect against bird flu, SARS and malaria. The researchers, led by Antonio Lanzavecchia, studied the memory cells that form in response to an infection and remain in our bodies, ensuring that the body reacts efficiently if attacked again by a particular pathogen. Lanzavecchia's team found a way to isolate B memory cells and to make them grow again, so specific antibodies could be developed to fight diseases.
